Olave is MLS's top defender

Two days after Nick Rimando was “snubbed” according to some by not winning the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award, one of his defensive teammates took home a different honor. The league announced Friday morning that RSL defender Jamison Olave was named the MLS Defender of the Year, edging out teammate Nat Borchers and Los Angeles’ Omar Gonzalez. Olave started 27 matches this season, and was only suspended … Continue reading»

Near Champions League yet again

Major League Soccer is guaranteed four CONCACAF Champions League berths each year. They’re awarded to the MLS Supporter’s Shield winner, the U.S. Open Cup winner (technically it could be a non MLS team but it rarely happens) and the two MLS Cup participants. If the same team earns two of the those spots, the Supporter’s Shield runner-up slides into the vacant spot. RSL is the Shield runner-up this … Continue reading»

MLS team could tank the final weekend

If you were the coach in San Jose or Colorado or even Seattle this weekend, would you tell your players not to give 100 percent knowing your team might get an easier draw in the MLS playoffs with a loss? It sounds nuts, but don’t be surprised if it happens. It’s no secret the Western Conference is far superior to the East this year with six teams qualifying … Continue reading»

Key RSL players aren't traveling to Panama

Real Salt Lake departed Salt Lake City International Airport this morning en route to Panama for its CONCACAF Champions League match with Arabe Unido on Wednesday. A victory would all but assure the club’s advancement out of group play. RSL will have to get the job done without several key players. Nat Borchers, Chris Wingert, Andy Williams, Javier Morales and Paulo Junior are not traveling with the team. … Continue reading»

Finals thoughts on Arabe match

Now that the dust has settled slightly from last night’s game, here are some of my random thoughts on Real Salt Lake’s 2-1 victory over Arabe Unido. Even though the behavior of Arabe Unido’s players feigning injury all game was absolutely embarrassing and a blatant example of why many Americans don’t like soccer, it served to unite the Rio Tinto Stadium fans like I’ve never seen before. The … Continue reading»

RSL lacks video on CCL opponent

As of Saturday night, Real Salt Lake still did not have any video of its CONCACAF Champions League opponent at Rio Tinto Stadium this Wednesday — Arabe Unido of Panama. RSL coach Jason Kreis joked with reporters to help him out and track down some video so his players don’t take the field Wednesday with no knowledge of their opponent. Kreis said the team couldn’t find any video … Continue reading»
