Olmes Garcia scored twice against the L.A. Galaxy last weekend in a 10-minute span. His heroics on the field earned him the MLS Player of the Week award. But I thought his celebration following the first of the two goals was deserving of an award of its own.
Garcia ran toward the sidelines, singled out fellow latino teammate Joao Plata, and began his shimmy and shake with him, salsa style. Following about 4 seconds of dancing, Garcia high-fived his teammates and went back on the field to finish the game, leaving little doubt who would win a dance off between this week’s Player of the Week and NFL receiver Victor Cruz.
Garcia is having a fantastic Major League Soccer debut. He has scored four goals in less than 450 minutes on the field. By comparison, RSL’s headlining striker and the 2010 Newcomer of the Year, Alvaro Saborio, has accomplished roughly the same feat so far in 2013 (four goals in roughly 450 minutes).
Viva la salsa! Here’s hoping Garcia scores many times so that we can see this celebration again!
