RSL sends another coach out the door

It’s been a disappointing season for the Portland Timbers this year, and on Monday coach John Spencer was fired as a result.

Portland Timbers’ coach John Spencer was fired on Monday, just two days after his team was chopped down by Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium, 3-0.

He’s the second coach in the past two years who coached his final game against Real Salt Lake.

On July 31, 2010, RSL soundly trounced D.C. United 3-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium, and four days later coach Curt Onalfo was fired by United management.

While RSL has put the final nail in the coffin on two coaches, for three others they made their debuts against the Utah club.

• FC Dallas fired Steve Morrow on April 20, 2008. Four days later Marco Ferruzzi led Dallas to 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake

• Toronto fired Preki on Sept. 14, 2010. One day later interim coach Nick Dasovic was at the helm as Real Salt Lake trounced Toronto 4-1 in a Champions League game.

• Vancouver fired Teitur Thordarson on May 30, 2011. Four days later interim coach Tom Soehn was at the helm as the Whitecaps lost at Real Salt Lake 2-0.
