Fans weigh in on favorite Real Salt Lake-Rapids moments

On Tuesday afternoon I asked @DesNewsReal followers on Twitter to share some of their favorite memories of the Rocky Mountain Cup rivalry. The responses were fantastic, and included everything from confetti to the Sandy City Police Department. Before I share some of my favorite tweet responses, I thought I’d share my own memories.

One thing I’ve learned through the years is that we all watch the game differently. As a sports writer I’m always watching the game thinking about how I’m going to describe the match. Deadlines are always a constraint for sports writers too, hence the reason we’re always writing throughout the game to ensure we meet our deadlines.

Many times we’ll have half our story written before a game ends, because quite frankly a 2-0 or 3-0 lead in soccer is pretty safe. I can’t tell you, however, how many times I’ve had to rewrite my stories when Real Salt Lake and Colorado are concerned.

I’ve always joked how entertaining it would be to save and publish the portions of stories that never made it to print because of late goals by Real Salt Lake or Colorado. In four of the last six meetings between these rivals a game-tying or game-winning goal was scored in the 88th minute or later. On each each occasion, that late goal had me and my peers frantically typing the backspace button.

Like RSL’s supporters, my memories of the Rocky Mountain Cup are just as exciting. I was there when Pablo Mastroeni went nuts, I was there when Yura Movsisyan sent RSL to the postseason and I was there when Alvaro Saborio scored twice in stoppage time. My interpretation of those events was just different.

Heading into the match, here are some of the memories that stand out most to RSL supporters:

@Checket88 “No question. Yura’s goal in 08 to pus us into the playoffs and knock them out. Change the team forever.”

@canyonvue “Pickens getting caught in the back of the net like a fish while Sabo scores on his botched goal kick, last game of 2010.”

@Jay_Hutchinson “Ran down the concourse at DSG screaming my head off when Sabo scored the game-tying goal last year. Got nasty looks from some fans.”

@scottdevey “Last year at half time the near riot that occurred in the smoking area. Never seen Sandy PD show up so fast.”

@RSLshow “My owner can beat up your owner.”

@rslsoapbox “My owner can beat up your player.”

@RSLshow “Eddie lifting the cup has to be near the top. Last year’s brace in stoppage has to rank high as well.”

@ryanoaks “@natborchers backwards header at the end of last year’s home match.”

@aayorkshire “No doubt, Yura’s 92nd winner.”

@goingbacktokali “Nearly getting thrown out of the Dick in ’08 when a bunch of us managed to get a suite there and wreaked havoc!”

@rslsoapbox “Having the Rapids fans in a total panic at RES, so bad they had the players bus moved to the loading dock, the power of confetti.”

@scottLittle “Hard to beat Mastroeni stuffing his jersey down his shorts and gesticulating at the crowd.”

Considering the history of these two teams, odds are good another fond memory will be created on Wednesday night at Rio Tinto Stadium.
