Nelson Gonzalez’s loan deal with Real Salt Lake has officially expired. However, RSL general manager Garth Lagerwey said Thursday afternoon he’s “cautiously optimistic” a new deal with Gonzalez’s Argentine club Quilmos will get done soon.
Gonzalez, 21, trained with the team on Thursday morning, a good sign that the two sides are close on their negotiations. Gonzalez joined RSL last summer on loan from Quilmos. He didn’t play in any matches last year, and this year he’s been limited to six appearances and one start because of a lingering hamstring strain.
Despite the injuries, all along Lagerwey said Real Salt Lake wanted to keep Gonzalez. RSL’s GM recently confirmed that the club is pursuing a buyout of Gonzalez’s contract or a new loan deal.
Gonzalez’s last appearance was a one minute substitute appearance in RSL’s 2-1 win at Chivas USA on May 22.
