Real Salt Lake striker Alvaro Saborio has been named the MLS Player of the Month for May. The RSL newcomer recorded a goal or assist in all five May victories, finishing with three goals and three assists. Earlier this month he was named the MLS Player of the Week for his two goals against the Houston Dynamo.
The Costa Rican international has scored five goals this year, and his active five-game streak with a goal or assist equals the franchise record set by Jason Kreis (2005), Jeff Cunningham (2006) and Javier Morales (2008).
Saborio is just the third player in RSL history to be named the MLS Player of the Month. Cunningham was honored back in August of 2006, and Nick Rimando was honored in July of 2008.
MLS Player of the Month and Player of the Week awards are based on voting by the North American Soccer Reporters. Edson Buddle was voted April’s top player. Visit the Soccer Reporters website to see how media members from across the country voted.
The Deseret News participates in the voting, and our vote for Player of the Month was Saborio.
