Real Salt Lake had three goalkeepers on its roster throughout the 2009 season, and general manager Garth Lagerwey said he wants a similar set-up for 2010.
Nick Rimando is clearly the No. 1 goalkeeper, and Kyle Reynish has been promoted to No. 2 with Chris Seitz now with the expansion Philadelphia Union. The No. 3 keeper will likely be determined during two weeks of training in Arizona beginning Saturday.
Lagerwey confirmed that RSL has signed goalkeeper Tim Melia to a contract, and the East Islip, N.Y. native trained with the team the past two days. He’ll be joined by two college kids in Arizona, and Lagerwey said they’ll keep the best of the three.
“If we have 24 roster spots, very likely we will carry three goalkeepers. We want to carry three goalkeepers. It’s something we believe in. It’s something we think helps our training sessions. It’s something that we think reduces the wear and tear on your starter in terms of a day-to-day basis. I think it’s part of our philosophy to try and carry three keepers,” said Lagerwey.
