Training and Ian Joy update

The wintery conditions forced Real Salt Lake indoors today, and now the club is training at the Spence Eccles Fieldhouse up at the University of Utah. It might not actually be a bad thing considering Seattle’s home stadium also has field turf. RSL is scheduled to have a training session later this week at Juan Diego High School’s stadium to get additional practice on the turf before leaving for Seattle on Friday morning.

I just got a quick injury update from trainer Jake Joachim, and Ian Joy will be out 4-6 weeks due to the hamstring injury sustained in last Saturday’s final preseason game of the season. Joachim also indicated that Robbie Russell has been 100 percent clear by the doctor, and now it’s just a pain threshold issue with his shoulder – which was operated in the offseason.

With Joy out, and Russell extremely unlikely to be ready for a 90-minute match, it seems like a given that Chris Wingert will shift over to left back in place of Joy against Seattle this weekend, and second-year player Tony Beltran will get the not at right back.

Also, Luis Miguel Escalada isn’t training today either. He’s riding a stationary bike after spraining his ankle in the second half Saturday against the Austin Aztecs
