What's going to happen to Dr. Goals?

My colleague Aaron Morton, a die-hard supporter of Greenock Morton of the Scottish First Division, pointed out a very interesting post on a Morton FC fan blog this evening.

According to greenockmortonfc, RSL striker Kenny Deuchar played in a friendly against Rangers last week, prompting rumors that he would sign with Morton on a temporary basis ala David Beckham and AC Milan. However, citing a story from the Greenock Telegraph, it appears that Deuchar was simply training with the team to stay fit and that no deal ‘ temporary or permanent ‘ is imminent.

Here’s what Morton manager Davie Irons said to the Telegraph about Deuchar:

‘It was a bit of a favour on our part to Kenny, and for him back to us. He is still an MLS player at this moment and unless that changes in future that’s as far as it goes. It was a workout for Kenny.
‘He is due back out in the States at the beginning of February and this was really just an opportunity for him to get a game and help us out too at the same time. He enjoyed it.
‘We have a good relationship with Kenny, having worked with him at Gretna, and maybe it could benefit us further down the line. You never know.’

Those quotes are particularly interesting considering that, in a conference call with reporters last week, RSL GM Garth Lagerway admitted that Real Salt Lake is considering buying out Deuchar’s contract.

Meanwhile, there are plenty of rumors swirling around regarding the futures of several other RSL players. While Lagerway told reporters that he plans to keep RSL’s ‘core group’ intact, you have to think there will be some departures and roster moves between now and the start of the 2009 season.

Soccer by Ives reported last week that RSL fullback Chris Wingert reportedly ‘isn’t happy with his contract,’ while rumors of Dema Kovalenko leaving RSL, also reported by Ives, have been ongoing in recent weeks.

So, the question is, who would you like to see stay and who would you like to see go? Should RSL give up on Dr. Goals or hold out hope for a resurgence next season? What should RSL do with Wingert, who was outstanding last season, if he indeed isn’t happy with his contract? And what about Kovalenko? Is he expendable?
