No Mexico, but perhaps another game.

With the announcement that the United States 2010 World Cup qualifier against Mexico will be held in Columbus? where the U.S. is undefeated in qualifiers? there are plenty of disappointed soccer fans around Utah, but that doesn’t mean that a qualifier isn’t still in the works.
When the rumors started that the game may be held at Rio Tinto Stadium surfaced, I tried to confirm it with some of the Real Salt Lake staff. Well, they obviously couldn’t say for sure they were going to get the Mexico game, but they did say were hoping to host one of the final-stage qualifiers. There are still plenty of games that haven’t been decided upon. Here is a quick look at the remaining games.

Which of the home contests would soccer fans be most excited to have come to Rio Tinto? My personal preference would be to have either T&T or Honduras simply because it is earlier in the qualifying round and would have greater importance than say the Costa Rican game when the U.S. could have either clinched or been eliminated. Of course, that philosophy could also backfire if somehow that last game came down to a do-or-die situation for the team and really needed a rowdy and pro-U.S. crowd behind it for motivation. But my feelings are the U.S. will have clinched a spot by then.
